02 Work Experience
2018
Golden Dawn Farms
2018-2019
Equipment operator & Mechanic
I actively supported the farmer in utilizing advanced farming equipment to carry out tasks during the harvest season. This involved working with Combines and other machinery to ensure efficient and effective operations.
One of my key responsibilities was to perform thorough checks and maintenance on the Combines before starting work each morning. This included inspecting crucial components such as oil levels, antifreeze, and the condition of the wheels. By ensuring everything was in optimal condition, I contributed to the reliable and safe functioning of the equipment.
At the end of each working day, it was my responsibility to perform maintenance tasks on the Combines. This involved blowing off debris, cleaning the machinery, and ensuring it was in proper working order for the next day's operations. I also made sure to fill the Combines with fuel, ensuring they were ready for uninterrupted operation throughout the harvest period.
Throughout this experience, I gained valuable hands-on knowledge of farm machinery and the importance of regular maintenance. I developed a keen eye for detail and learned the significance of precision and efficiency in agricultural operations. This experience deepened my understanding of the crucial role that advanced farming equipment plays in maximizing productivity and achieving optimal outcomes on the farm.
Amajuba Farms
Farm Manager & Equipment operator
During my time working with a farmer, I had the opportunity to gain valuable experience in managing crops, overseeing employees, and utilizing various farming equipment. In this role, I was responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing farm operations to ensure optimal productivity and efficiency.
One of my key responsibilities was managing the application of chemicals to the crops. I carefully measured and added the appropriate amount of chemicals to the sprayer, ensuring the correct dosage per acre. This involved adhering to safety protocols and following guidelines to prevent over-application or under-application of chemicals.
Additionally, I played a crucial role in handling fertilizer application. I ensured that the spreader was properly calibrated, enabling accurate distribution of fertilizer across the fields. By monitoring and adjusting the calibration settings, I maintained precise and efficient fertilizer application, optimizing crop growth and yield potential.
As part of my responsibilities, I also focused on the calibration of planters. It was essential to calibrate the planters correctly, ensuring the accurate placement of seeds in the soil. By meticulously adjusting the planter settings, I ensured consistent seed spacing and optimal planting conditions, contributing to successful crop establishment.
Throughout this experience, I gained in-depth knowledge of crop management practices, machinery operation, and calibration techniques. I developed strong attention to detail and the ability to execute tasks with precision and accuracy. Working in a dynamic agricultural environment allowed me to understand the importance of meticulous planning, monitoring, and adaptability in achieving successful farming outcomes.
2019
Wilson/ Zubke Farms
Foreman/ General worker
After completing my A-levels, I made the decision to embark on a unique opportunity in the farming industry in the United States of America. Over the course of nine months, I gained extensive experience working with a wide range of farming equipment and machinery, assuming various roles within the company.
One of my primary responsibilities was serving as a mechanic. I had the opportunity to work on trucks, tractors, harvesting equipment, planters, and other essential machinery. This involved conducting repairs, performing maintenance tasks, and ensuring that all equipment was in optimal working condition. Through this hands-on experience, I developed a strong understanding of mechanical systems and honed my troubleshooting skills.
In addition to my mechanical duties, I also had the privilege of being an operator on various machinery within the company. This encompassed operating tractors, harvesting equipment, and other specialized machinery. I became adept at maneuvering and controlling these machines, ensuring efficient and precise operation in the field.
Furthermore, I contributed to the overall infrastructure of the farm. This involved assisting with the maintenance and construction of farm structures and facilities. From repairing fences to building sheds, I actively participated in enhancing the farm's infrastructure to support smooth operations and maximize efficiency.
Working in the farming industry in the United States provided me with invaluable experience and insights into the intricacies of agricultural operations. It allowed me to develop a diverse skill set, from mechanical expertise to equipment operation and infrastructure management. This experience deepened my passion for the industry and provided a solid foundation for my future endeavors in the field of farming and machinery.
2022
Mafundzalo Farms
Farm Manager & Equipment Operator
During my semester break, I sought an opportunity to gain practical experience in the farming industry. I joined a farmer and took on responsibilities in managing a potato grading plant and overseeing the transportation of potatoes. Additionally, I had the chance to operate various farming equipment, further expanding my skill set.
One of my main roles was managing the potato grading plant. This involved overseeing the sorting and grading process to ensure that only high-quality potatoes met the standards for packaging and distribution. I supervised the operation of the grading machinery, closely monitoring the quality of the potatoes and making necessary adjustments to maintain efficiency and accuracy.
In addition to managing the grading plant, I played a key role in the transportation of potatoes. I coordinated the logistics, ensuring the timely and safe transport of potatoes from the farm to the designated destinations. This involved organizing truck schedules, monitoring loading and unloading processes, and ensuring compliance with transportation regulations.
